Hold Fast: James Hammarhead
By Emma Z. on 11/22/2011
James Hammarhead (aka Loughead*) grew up riding dirt bikes in the deep woods of Pennsylvania. He followed an atypical career path that culminated in a doctorate in Neuropsychology and a faculty position at the University of Pennsylvania. By day, James leads a brain imaging team in the Department of Psychiatry, and by night he builds motorcycles.
A yearning for a modern motorcycle with the simplicity of the dirt bikes from his youth prompted the founding of Hammarhead Industries. Hammarhead creates basic yet modern motorcycle inspired by the iconic bikes of the 1950s. James designs each prototype as a template for a limited series of production builds. Customers bikes are executed with the expectation of daily use and limited maintenance. Hammarhead motorcycles are design to be ridden.
*James retains Loughead for academic publications. His kids all have Hammarhead as their surname (derived from the combination of Loughead and his wife's last name Hammarlund) and he plans to join them once he can find the correct form to fill out.
