Vulcans

VulcansVulcans are a very new band from Las Vegas with only a demo out at the moment. We don't normally feature bands without an official release, but we also don't usually listen to a band's demo over and over.

Vulcans spawned from the ashes of SJ favorites Curl up and Die and (the lesser known) Weirding Way as a bunch of friends getting together and playing music. This is still the case, with all the members sharing a house and also a cat they named "drinks."

The music is really hard to put a finger on. The first style that hits first in most of their songs is metal. Then you notice the keyboards. Not black metal BS… analog synths ala new wave. Singer/Keyboardist (pianist?) Keil does a good job of alternating between screaming his head off and singing melodically...but not in a emo way. It's pure pop. The good kind.

The song structures are pretty across the board and interwoven with complex guitar duality that brings to mind both metal and math-rock sensibilities.

We're so psyched on this band that we asked them to play our Magic Showcase a few weeks back with the Bronx. They didn't let us down in the least. Bassist Geoff was off touring with another band so instead of replacing him with a human, Vulcans opted to run a sequencer through his bass stuff. It sounded pretty rad.
